These (anti hype) ideas sound compelling, and they inspire a comforting, wait-and-see attitude. But you won’t find them reflected in “The Scaling Era: An Oral History of AI, 2019-2025” (Stripe Press), a wide-ranging and informative compendium of excerpts from interviews with A.I. insiders by the podcaster Dwarkesh Patel. A twenty-four-year-old wunderkind interviewer, Patel has attracted a large podcast audience by asking A.I. researchers detailed questions that no one else even knows to ask, or how to pose. (“Is the claim that when you fine-tune on chain of thought, the key and value weights change so that the steganography can happen in the KV cache?” he asked Sholto Douglas, of DeepMind, last March.) In “The Scaling Era,” Patel weaves together many interviews to create an over-all picture of A.I.’s trajectory. (The title refers to the “scaling hypothesis”—the idea that, by making A.I.s bigger, we’ll quickly make them smarter. It seems to be working.)
